Crowds were eager to get a glimpse of the newly renovated Allegheny YMCA on Pittsburgh’s North Side on Monday.

The historic 1926 facility at 600 W. North Ave. opened to excited patrons before dawn, following a $26 million, year-long renovation.

“It’s gorgeous,” said Linda Scott, membership services coordinator. “We’re getting a lot of good feedback.

“Everybody’s really excited.”

The project was intended to modernize the building, which contains nearly 100 single-room, low-income residential units that help preserve affordable housing on the North Side. The housing is especially important as revitalization along the Mexican War Streets and nearby neighborhoods has displaced some long-time residents, according to the YMCA’s website.

Work at the building included adding air conditioning and elevators, improving the pool, and updating the kitchen and other common areas using environmentally friendly materials.

The project also includes a redesigned wellness floor, new strength and cardio equipment, a group exercise studio, updated locker rooms and improved accessibility.

Crews also took care to preserve the building’s historic character, restoring the original wainscoting in the main entryway. Original windows were removed and preserved at a studio in New Jersey.

Michele Charmello, executive director, told the North Side Chronicle that she is “incredibly thankful to local residents and neighbors for their patience and understanding throughout this renovation.”

“One of the most important parts of this renovation was making the building accessible to all of our community members,” Charmello said. “These updates ensure everyone can fully use the facility.”

The Allegheny YMCA serves more than 300 children in programming rooms that overlook Allegheny Commons Park West. More than 800 senior citizens participate in healthy-aging programs and more than 1,400 adults are serviced with other wellness curriculum.

Classes, including yoga and Zumba, resume Saturday. Information will be available online at pittsburghymca.org.

Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.
