Warming centers open as Arctic blast expected this week

Warming centers in the region are beginning to open as temperatures are expected to plummet to the single digits Wednesday and Thursday.

The list below will be updated as more shelters open.

Allegheny County

  • Magee, West Penn, Brookline and Phillips Community Recreation Centers in Pittsburgh will be open until 9 p.m. as warming centers. The Jefferson, Ammon, Paulson, Ormsby and Warrington centers are until 8 p.m. (Locations are listed here.)
  • Pittsburgh senior centers typically close at 4 p.m., but the Greenfield, Homewood, Sheraden and South Side centers will remain open until 9 p.m.
  • The Light of Life Rescue Mission on Pittsburgh’s North Side, 913 Western Ave., 412-258-6100, has their warming station open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be hot chocolate and snacks as well as donated winter items and hand/feet warmers available to those in need. If the shelter is full, the organization will transport people to a shelter Downtown.
  • The Downtown Low Barrier Shelter at Smithfield United Church of Christ, 620 Smithfield St., will have extended hours this week only from 6 p.m. - 8 a.m. Monday-Friday, and 6 p.m. - 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • Roots of Faith in Sharpsburg is open through 8:30 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. There will be coffee, tea and a warm meal. The center is 800 Main Street. Emergency services will be available for those who need further assistance. For more, call 412-977-9136.
  • Turtle Creek Borough Building, 125 Monroeville Ave., Wednesday & Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Glendale Hose Co. #1 in Scott, opened Wednesday at 8 a.m. Call 412-276-4611 for information.
  • Duquesne Council Chambers, 12 South Second St., 2nd Floor. After-hours access is available through the police department.
  • Clairton Borough Building, 551 Ravensburg Blvd., open until Friday at 4 p.m. Clairton police can provide transportation for residents.
  • Pittsburgh Technical College in North Fayette, 1111 McKee Rd., open 24 hours.
  • Port Vue Borough Building, 1191 Romine Ave., open Jan. 30 and 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Richland Township Building, 4019 Dickey Rd., open Jan 30 and 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Westmoreland County

  • Allegheny Valley Salvation Army Corps and Community Center, 200 Freeport Road, New Kensington, will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Volunteers will offer transportation to an overnight shelter to those in need.
  • The River - A Community Church, will open a warming center at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Use the rear entrance, 200 Freeport Road, New Kensington.
  • Allegheny Township Community Building, 136 Community Building Road, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Residents who need to use the center during off-business hours should contact Allegheny Township Police at 724-845-9410 or Westmoreland County 911.
  • Murrysville-Export Emergency Management Agency will provide a warming center at Murrysville Alliance Church, 4130 Old William Penn Hwy., on an as-needed basis Wednesday and Thursday. Anyone in need of emergency shelter or special care should contact Emergency Management Coordinator Capt. Chuck Tappe at ctappe@murrysvillegov.org or 724-309-2369.
  • Lower Burrell Fire Hall #3, 3255 Leechburg Road, will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Monessen Salvation Army, 308 Schoonmaker Ave., Monessen, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monessen Civic Center, 9 Donner Ave., Monessen, will be open 24 hours.
  • Welcome Home Shelter for women and families, 218 S. Maple Ave., Greensburg, 724-838-9133.
  • Union Mission men’s shelter, 2217 Harrison Ave., Latrobe, 724-539-3550.
