Ohio River flood advisory prompts Mon Wharf parking restrictions
Parking at the Mon Wharf will be restricted Thursday, and the parking area will be closed Friday because of a flood advisory that has been issued for the Ohio River at Pittsburgh.
No parking will be allowed along the lower wall of the Mon Wharf on Thursday. All vehicles must be removed from the lot by 7 p.m. that evening.
The National Weather Service advisory will be in effect from Friday morning until Sunday evening.
Between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain is expected across the Pittsburgh region Wednesday and Thursday. The rain, combined with snow melt, will cause the Ohio River to rise above action stage, meteorologist Shannon Hefferan said.
The river was under flood stage Wednesday, when it was at 16.9 feet, according to the advisory. The flood stage is 25 feet.
The river is forecast to crest around 20 feet early Saturday afternoon. At that level, water is up to a foot deep in the lower areas of the North Shore. Water starts flowing onto the Mon parking wharf at 18 feet, and it is completely flooded at 19.5 feet.
More parking is available at the First Avenue garage and Second Avenue plaza, the authority advises.
