This isn’t news to anyone who regularly travels Interstate 376 around Pittsburgh, but the highway ranked as one of the most congested roads in the country, according to a recent study.
I-376, known as the Parkway West and Parkway East between I-79 in Robinson and the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Monroeville, was rated the fifth most congested road in the United States last year, the INRIX Inc. study showed. The study ranked congestion in more than 200 cities in 38 countries by estimating daily and yearly delays.
On I-376, drivers face a daily delay of 18 minutes, or about 72 hours per year.
The scorecard also analyzed congestion and the severity of it in the top 60 urban areas in the United States.
Pittsburgh ranked seventh in hours lost because of congestion. Boston, Washington, Seattle, Chicago, New York City and Los Angeles took the top six spots.
Americans in 2018 lost an average of 97 hours due to congestion, costing them nearly $87 billion or an average of $1,348 per driver, according to the study.
The average Pittsburgh driver lost 127 hours last year to congestion. It cost the city $1.2 billion or an average of $1,776 per driver, according to the scorecard.
“Congestion costs Americans billions of dollars each year. It will continue to have serious consequences for national and local economies, businesses and citizens in the years to come,” INRIX transportation analyst Trevor Reed said in a statement. “If we’re to avoid traffic congestion becoming a further drain on our economy, we must invest in intelligent transportation systems to tackle our mobility challenges.”
