Nearly two dozen people are out of their homes after a fire in Pittsburgh’s Banksville neighborhood Saturday morning, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.
Firefighters responded around 10:50 a.m. to the fire in the 400 block of Mapleview Drive.
The fire, believed to have started in an apartment bedroom, produced heavy smoke throughout the building, public safety spokesperson said. A woman and a cat were rescued from the affected unit.
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Medics were unable to resuscitate that cat, public safety said.
A total of 21 people, consisting of 16 adults and five children, along with two dogs were displaced by the fire, public safety said. The American Red Cross was providing temporary housing help and housing arrangements.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
