The speech and debate program at Aquinas Academy in Hampton is making strides.

More than 20 students have participated in speaking competitions throughout the current school year, concluding with the National qualifier, the National Catholic qualifier and Pennsylvania High School Speech League state qualifier.

At the PHSSL State Championships, held online in March, senior Andy D’Angelo competed in humorous interpretation and sophomore Elizabeth Swift in impromptu speaking.

Sophomore Chase Harrison participated in congress and served as presiding officer for the opening session.

Freshman Clara Yuo finished in the top 12 in the commentary category, and fellow ninth-graders Anne Dolan and JJ Ortiz finished in the top 12 in duo interpretation of literature.
