A man was hospitalized Friday following a midday shooting that prompted a nearby school to go into lockdown.
Police said officers were dispatched around 11:30 a.m. to the 200 block of East End Avenue in the city’s Point Breeze neighborhood. A call came in about an argument followed by gunshots.
First responders found a male victim, who authorities have not named, in the 7700 block of Brashear Street, police said. He had been shot once in the back and suffered a minor graze wound to his chin.
The man was “conscious, alert and speaking with officers and medics,” police spokeswoman Emily Bourne said. The victim was taken to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses told police that the victim was involved in an altercation with two other men, Bourne said. No arrests have been announced.
The Environmental Charter School was put on lockdown after reports of gunfire came in around 11:30 a.m., school officials told TribLive news partner WTAE.
“All students and staff remain inside the buildings and classes have continued on their regular schedule,” officials said in a prepared statement.
“ECS will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary,” they added.
