A man associated with a Hill District street gang, 11 Hunnit, will serve five years in federal prison for selling crack cocaine.
Tyree Campbell, 30, pleaded guilty in October before U.S. District Judge Stephanie Haines to one count of conspiracy with intent to deliver more than 28 grams of cocaine.
He faced a mandatory minimum prison term of five years. Haines also ordered him to serve an additional four years of supervised release following incarceration.
At Campbell’s sentencing hearing on Friday, he apologized to the court.
“I know everything wasn’t right with what I was doing,” he said.
Campbell said he hopes to “be a better person to society when I get back.”
Defense attorney Marty Dietz told the court that his client grew up without a father, and that his mother, who is sober now, battled drug addiction.
Campbell, who at various times has also used drugs, has an extensive criminal history involving drugs.
He was arrested as part of four separate, but related, criminal complaints investigating drug and gun crimes in May.
The investigation included wiretaps and electronic surveillance that began in January 2020, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The 11 Hunnit gang was allegedly led by Jimmy Wopo, a rapper who was killed in June 2018. Wopo’s real name was Travon Smart.
An indictment unsealed two months later accused the gang of killing at least three rival gang members dating back to 2015.
