At the library: Here are some upcoming programs at Northland Public Library
Virtual radio hour murder-mystery to air on July 21
Staff members and friends of Northland Public Library will present a virtual radio hour murder-mystery titled “The Case of the Goofy Groom” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 21.
The Dasheill Hammet radio show tells the story of detectives Nora and Nick Charles as they help their newlywed friends solve who wants to kill them.
Registration is underway and can be done online, in person at the Ask a Librarian Desk or by calling 412-366-8100, ext. 113.
A Zoom link will be emailed the week of the program.
Family Storytime set in Learning Garden
The library will offer a Family Storytime at 1 p.m. Wednesdays during the summer in the Learning Garden, weather permitting.
Join us for picture books, songs and more. No registration is required.

Public invited to meet authors, illustrators of children’s books
Northland Public Library is hosting a Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators Day from 10 a.m. to noon June 27.
Patrons of all ages are invited to drop in and visit Norbert the Northland Owl, meet local children’s book authors, hear them read their stories and participate in crafts and activities that celebrate children’s literature.
No registration is required.
Deadline looms for bookmark contest
Children and adults of all ages are invited to participate in Northland’s annual summer bookmark contest.
To participate, pick up an entry form at the Children and Teen Services or Ask a Librarian desk or download one online.
Two winners will be chosen from each age category: 0-5, 6-9, 10-12, 13-17 and 18-plus.
Only one entry is permitted per person, and it must be an original work. Copyrighted characters, art and logos are not permitted, and do not place your name on the design.
Any 2D art medium can be used, such as crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.; computer-generated images and use of 3D materials are not permitted.
Please note: Entries will not be returned.
Entries should be dropped off at the library by Saturday, June 28.
Winners will be announced July 3. Each winner will receive 30 bookmarks printed with their winning design and a certificate. All winning bookmarks also will be distributed at the library.
Programs for adults
• Caregiver Support Cafe: Hospital Social Worker: 6 to 7 p.m. July 10
Join Erin McMaster, a memory care adviser from Arden Courts, and staff members from AHN Wexford to discuss how hospital social workers can help you and your family. Registration is required.
• Movie Matinee: “The Chef” (2012): 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. July 16
Join us for this “foody” PG-13 comedy/drama from France that contains a “belly full” of laughs. Three-Star Michelin chef Alexandre needs a sous chef to help keep his stars, his restaurant and his reputation. When Alexandre comes across a self-taught cook who paints houses for a living, he takes a chance. No registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Aug. 20 matinee will showcase Brussels and West Virginia.
Programs for young people
• Tween and Teen Crafting Club: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays
Children 10 to 18 are invited to stop the library by every Monday and make a craft. Registration is required. The June 30 project is mason jar snow globes; July 7, felt coasters; July 14, painted tote bags; July 21, screen-printed T-shirts (bring your own plain T-shirt); July 28, macrame rainbow wall art.
• Tail Waggin’ Tutors: 11 a.m. to noon July 11, 18 and 25
Children in grades kindergarten and up will get 10 minutes to read to a therapy dog. Bring your own book or use one of ours. Please call the CATS desk at 412-366-8100, ext. 4, to register each available morning. The number of open slots will depend on the number of available dogs.
• Summer Crafting: 10 to 11 a.m. June 26 and July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31
Children 7 to 12 are invited to drop in on Thursdays from June 26 through July 31 for a 15-minute art activity. There will be a different activity each week. No registration is required, but you may have to wait for your turn to create.
