Blue Mist Road: Fact and fiction
Every year at Halloween, this barely traveled road on the edge of North Park leaps into prominence. What started as a local story is commonly listed as one of Pittsburgh’s most haunted sites and has been featured in publications such as Weird Pennsylvania.
Just a brief online search, or visit to Reddit, provides a sampling of stories. But what is true, and what is legend?
Join Northern Tier Library at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18, as we examine the tall tales of Blue Mist Road. This program will be limited to 40 attendees, and registration is required.
All attendees must wear masks.
Take-home crafts
Kids of all ages are invited to enjoy a simple, weekly take-home craft. Please call or register online to reserve a weekly supply kit that can be picked up every Monday after 1 p.m. inside our lobby and enjoyed at home. This program is for kids of all ages, and registration is required.
The weekly project
The Weekly Project features a variety of activities that can be enjoyed from home such as cooking, crafting, art and STEM. Each week will showcase a different take-home project for children to work on with their families.

Natureology: Birds
Did you know that birds are descended from dinosaurs? These amazing creatures fly, swim and decorate our neighborhoods with brilliant colors. Learn more about the beautiful birds all around us with Tony at Natureology on Oct. 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
This is an outdoor program, so please bring a camping chair or blanket to sit on. If there’s rain, the program will be rescheduled for the following day at the same time. This program will be limited to 40 attendees, and registration is required. All attendees must wear masks.
Halloween celebration
Enjoy some outdoor Halloween fun with Northern Tier Library on Oct. 28 from 5 to 6 p.m. There will be trick-or-treating, spooky take-home craft kits and a costume parade.
This event is weather permitting, as it will be held outdoors. All ages are welcome, and registration is required to account for supplies.
Maker Mondays
Join us at the beginning of each week at our Pine Center location for Maker Mondays, a program where you can create fun projects related to arts, crafts, electronics, sewing and more.
• Oct. 11: Perler Beads — Create a small work of art using fuse beads.
• Oct. 18: Sewing Basics — Learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine.
• Oct. 25: Braided Bookmark — Use cord and beads to create a unique bookmark. This program is held from 2:45 -to 5:30 p.m. every Monday in Northern Tier’s Pine Center.
Makerspace take-home kit
The Richland location will offer a take-home kit the last Monday of every month that can be picked up inside the lobby and enjoyed at home. Each kit will feature directions and supplies for the featured project.
• Oct. 25: Braided Bookmark — Use cord and beads to create a unique bookmark. Please call or register online to reserve a take-home kit. Registration is required to account for supplies.
An evening of Richland history
The History & Landmarks Society of Richland AC presents “An Evening of Richland History” at Northern Tier Regional Library on Oct. 6 at 6:45 p.m. (first presenter at 7 p.m.). This special evening will feature three 20- to 30- minute presentations about historic Richland Township sites.
Paul Becker, senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, will present the rich history of this 150-year-old church.
Larry Bracco, longtime executive director of the Pine-Richland Youth Center will present the history of the center, founded in 1950 as the Richland Youth Foundation and serving area youth for 71 years.
Cono Passione of the History & Landmarks Society of Richland AC, and recent restorer of the Bakerstown Cemetery, will talk about this historic and mysterious cemetery which was established in 1826 by Thomas Baker as the Charlestown Cemetery.
This program will be limited to 40 attendees, and registration is required. All attendees must wear masks.
Cooking classes with Chef Carol
Join Northern Tier Library and Chef Carol Nardello this fall for a new series of cooking classes.
• Oct. 5: Harvest Gathering, 6 p.m.
• Nov. 2: Mediterranean Pasta Feast, 6 p.m.
• Dec. 7: Holiday Menu Classes are $40 each. Please note that adjustments may be made to this program (and if needed, cancelation) in regards to everyone’s safety.
Knit lit
Beginners are invited to come and learn how to knit. Experienced crafters are invited to bring a project to work on.
If weather permits, we will meet outside on the library lawn behind the book drops on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Registration is required.
Fall bulb planting take-home kit
For a beautiful spring display, plant your bulbs in the fall. Sandy Csikari, 20-year master gardener, will share instructions and tips on how you can best plant and care for bulbs in your garden. Request one of our take-home kits to receive an informational packet from Sandy, as well as your own bulbs to plant.
Registration is required, and take-home kits will be available for lobby pickup Oct. 12. There is a limit of one kit per family.
Fresh air story time
This program will have two sessions available each week:
• Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. through Oct. 20
• Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. through Oct. 21
Come enjoy some toys and games before the start of our outside family story time every Wednesday and Thursday morning. The program is an outdoor event located on the side lawn (behind the library’s book drops), and is weather permitting.
Families should bring a blanket or camping chair for somewhere to sit, and a rattle or noise-making toy to play along with the music.
Because this is a children’s program, masks will be required when around others.
