An argument over a Pittsburgh man walking in the middle of the street late at night led to one of two shootings early Sunday in the city’s busiest entertainment district.
Devin Maurice Singleton, 25, was walking down 15th Street in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood shortly before midnight Saturday, according to a criminal complaint. A motorist who was trying to drive down that road started arguing with him.
The motorist got out of his vehicle. Police said Singleton threw the first punch.
Singleton then pulled out a gun, the complaint said. The driver began to walk away when Singleton shot him from behind — striking him multiple times in his left leg, left arm and buttocks.
A Pittsburgh police sergeant on foot patrol a block away ran to the scene at 12:01 a.m. Sunday after he heard about seven gunshots, the complaint said.
Officers found the victim bleeding in the intersection of 15th and Bingham streets, the complaint said. Singleton, who was standing next to him, was arrested without incident.
He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and arraigned Sunday night, court records show. A judge denied him bail, noting in the court record that Singleton “poses a threat to the victim, witnesses and community.”
Pittsburgh police Chief Jason Lando told TribLive news partner WTAE that the road rage incident appeared unrelated to the fatal shooting that occurred in South Side later that morning.
The gunshot detection system ShotSpotter recorded that at least eight shots were fired near the intersection of South 18th and East Carson streets around 2:30 a.m., police said.
Responding officers and first responders found a man later identified as Amaree K. Dawson, 23, of Bellevue and rushed him to UPMC Mercy hospital, a criminal complaint said. He died there 20 minutes after the shooting.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Dawson Sunday night.
The preliminary hearing for Singleton, who was charged in the road rage shooting, is set for April 8. His attorney was not listed early Monday in court records.
