In brief: Joey Fabus Superhero 5K, flea market and more in Bethel Park
Joey Fabus Superhero 5K
The Joey Fabus Superhero 5K Run/1 Mile Walk will be held on Sept. 14 at 9 am. The race starts at Bethel Park High School and the course goes through local neighborhoods. Joey was an 8-year-old boy who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in May 2014. His cancer, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, currently has a survival rate of 0%. On Jan. 21, 201,5 Joey died from DIPG.
The Joey Fabus Childhood Cancer Foundation was formed in his honor to help bring awareness and funding to find a cure for DIPG. This event is the foundation’s largest fundraiser, with more than 400 participants last year. The Foundation is looking for not only runners and walkers but also company sponsors. By extending your support for this run, you will be exposing your company to Pittsburgh’s large running community while demonstrating your compassion for children who are currently diagnosed with DIPG and those who have passed.
This year we are honoring Jett Owsley, a 5-year-old from Mt. Lebanon who is battling DIPG. We also support Sam Levine, a 19-year-old battling DIPG from Upper St. Clair. Jett, Sam and their families need support to be able to keep fighting. They need help with paying medical bills, supporting their children and families through diagnosis, loss of income and transportation to get to treatment or trial locations and so many other things. Sponsorship and donations are tax-deductible. Please visit jfccf.org to learn more about DIPG and to see the amazing work the foundation is doing.

Game Day
Members of the Ruthfred Acres Woman’s Club have many philanthropic endeavors within the club as internal monthly fundraisers. Some are competitive, some are social and some are just for fun. Game Day is one activity that is just for socializing and fun.
This year, Game Day players have been meeting at Arby’s in Bethel Park on the fourth Monday of the month at 11:30 a.m.
Joan Morton, a long-time member of the RAWC, chairs and has been hosting Game Day for many years. Members and guests meet, and for a $2 charitable contribution to the club, have an afternoon of food, cards and laughter. The games are easy and family-friendly.
We arrive at Arby’s for lunch at 11:30 a.m., place our orders and have lunch together. Then we start our friendly card games. You may join us even if you are not a member.
Arby’s is located at 3205 Library Road in Bethel Park.
Association of University People
The Association of University People invites singles 50 and over who are four-year college graduates to join them for activities and to meet new people. Activities include spring/summer picnics, monthly dinners, a book group, Scrabble, meeting up at local outdoor concerts and wineries.

Bethel Park Farmers Market
The Bethel Park Farmers’ Market runs Tuesdays through Oct. 14 for an extended season in South Park, directly off Corrigan Drive near the ice skating rink.
Guests can look forward to an improved layout to allow for food trucks to be in a separate section along with periodic kids’ activities, entertainment, recipes posted on the farmers’ market website inspired by ingredients from each week’s vendors and more.
St. Clair Hospital will be at the market weekly through September, offering complimentary health screenings, providing information and sponsoring the “Food Assistance Match” program, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to fresh, nutritious food from local farmers and small businesses to individuals and families most in need.
This year, the market is being led by events coordinator Sarah Komatsu .
Komatsu will be managing the Bethel Park Farmers’ Market, ‘No Cook Tuesdays,’ and Indoor Markets while also providing support for various municipal special events.
New vendors include Amazing Books and Records (a used book and records store), Chocolate Moonshine (chocolates, fudge and truffle bars), and Billy’s Country Smoke House (offering smoked meats, preserved meat sticks and homemade sausages).
