Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary Breakfast Club awarded grants to 36 recipients on April 23 at its annual Night of Giving.

The Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary, Breakfast Club topped its charitable donations by a whopping 18% at this years’ Night of Giving on April 23.

Two communities, dozens of local businesses and volunteers came together at Bella Sera in Canonsburg to celebrate the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary, Breakfast Clubs’ annual Night of Giving.

“Thirty six charities received a total of $65,000 in grant donations,” said Leigh Harkreader, USCBP Rotary Breakfast Club president.

Charities will use the grant money for an array of items, including special needs musical theater camps, new freezers, sheet music, personal security devices, hay, soccer and basketball camps, building gardens and food support — but they deliver so much more.

“From stability, safety and security, leadership, compassion, empowerment and ultimately dignity, these charities collectively change lives — and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said Harkreader.

The Night of Giving is the culminating event that is a direct result of the Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park, Rotary Breakfast Clubs’ annual Chicken BBQ held each fall at Bethel Park High School. The event raised just over $70,000 and after all expenses were paid, the club was able to donate $65,000 to local charities through the grant application process that happens in late winter.

“This year we received 40 plus grant applications requesting over $100,000. It was truly difficult to distribute the grants this year,” said Russ Spicuzza.

“This event truly showcases the impact our 35-member club has on the local community,” said Bill Findle, Night of Giving event chair. “And it’s a chance to thank all of those who supported our BBQ event — whether by sponsoring the event, buying a dinner, donating a dinner or volunteering.”

Next year’s event date has been set for Oct. 11.
