Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik announced Sunday that he is set to undergo shoulder surgery.
The surgery is slated for Monday at UPMC Mercy, Zubik said, and will repair a significant tear in his left shoulder.
“I have full confidence in my well-respected surgeon and his very capable staff,” Zubik said, adding that he was requesting prayers for his operation and recovery.
Zubik’s left arm will be incapacitated for about six weeks following surgery. A full recovery will take between six and eight months, with regular physical therapy.
Zubik joked that between his upcoming shoulder surgeries and past back surgeries, he’s “well on the way to becoming a ‘bionic bishop.’”
“It is my intention to the best of my ability to fulfill my commitments,” Zubik said. “I beg your patience and prayers that I may do so. It is my hope that I will be ready to embrace Holy Week with both arms.”
