Second Avenue Commons at 700 Second Ave., Pittsburgh.

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services and the city of Pittsburgh have extended the current “Code Blue” action until 8 a.m. Monday.

“Code Blue” is declared when the National Weather Service forecasts the air temperature to fall below 26 degrees between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. The plan can also be enacted when the city’s Office of Emergency Management activates the emergency operations center in response to severe weather conditions.

Lows below 26 degrees are forecast until Monday night, when the low is expected to be 29 into Tuesday morning, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. Highs on Tuesday will be in the 40s.

County, city and local homeless shelter provider staff have been mobilized to provide support for the Code Blue action, the county Department of Human Services said.

During a Code Blue event, unsheltered people will be directed to shelter at Second Avenue Commons, 700 Second Ave., Downtown.

All DHS shelters serving persons experiencing homelessness will remain open 24 hours per day while air temperatures remain below 26 degrees.

If the regular shelters become full, people will be taken to the severe weather emergency shelter. The city will use Ammon Recreation Center, 2217 Bedford Ave.

Outreach teams will focus on informing people in the unhoused community about the Code Blue status and offering services and support to access shelter options.

If the temperature drops below 20, the city’s recreation and Healthy Active Living Centers will open as warming locations.

People seeking shelter should go to the Second Avenue Commons shelter or call Allegheny Link at 866-730-2368.

Families seeking shelter should call Allegheny Link or visit 1 Smithfield St. in Pittsburgh to meet with a service coordinator. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
