The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who died Wednesday after police say he apparently fell multiple stories in an open stairwell of a Downtown apartment building.

The victim was Michael Mongelluzzo, 52, of Pittsburgh, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Pittsburgh police responded around noon to reports of a body in a stairwell of Allegheny Apartments, which sits near the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Cherry Way, said police spokeswoman Emily Bourne.

Mongelluzzo hit pipes as he fell and suffered severe trauma. He was dead when police arrived, Bourne said.

No foul play is suspected. A security camera trained on the 19th floor stairwell entrance shows the man entering alone, Bourne said.

The medical examiner’s office ruled the death a suicide.

Police are working to determine whether Mongelluzzo lived in the building, which Bourne described as secure.
