The Carnegie Library in Braddock is so old it predates its counterpart in Oakland, which just turned 125 on Nov. 5.

Braddock’s branch is 131. And in need of repair.

On Thursday the Braddock community received good news: The library’s major renovation campaign has been selected to receive a $750,000 state grant.

The funding for the project was announced through the state Department of Educations’ Keystone Library program, funded by a portion of the realty transfer tax. Through the program, grantees can receive up to 50% of the funding needed to upgrade or rehabilitate public libraries.

“When I first took office, I was thrilled to be able to celebrate the Braddock Carnegie Library’s 130th birthday and recognize the importance this institution has had in our community,” said state Rep. Summer Lee, D-Braddock. “I’m equally happy to announce this major state grant, which will help preserve the library for another 130 years and help it evolve to continue its vital mission in our community.”

The library has been raising money to pay for its renovation campaign, which will include much-needed structural repairs to the building itself and increased ADA accommodations.

“At a time when folks are feeling disconnected, libraries have more than ever stepped up and leaned into their roles of community hubs and anchors,” Lee said. “This funding will enable the Braddock library to continue to be that, and to continue to educate and inspire our community.”
