Bridgeville Area Historical Society is hosting a Native Americans in the Chartiers Valley exhibit through November and December.

In recognition of Native American Indian Heritage Month, the Bridgeville Area Historical Society is hosting an exhibit dedicated to Native Americans in the Chartiers Valley at the history center, 441 Station Street, Bridgeville.

Included in the exhibit are two posters recording indigenous presence here from Paleolithic times until Colonial times, a large tri-fold presenting artifacts and information acquired from a well-documented local archaeological excavation, two posters depicting the evolution of projectile points from the large fluted Clovis point to the tiny arrowheads of the Woodlands Era, and one poster memorializing four Native Americans encountered by settlers in the 18th century.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is an impressive assemblage of projectile points collected on Bridgeville’s Gould City Hill. Prints of well-known paintings of Native Americans by local artists Andrew Knez Jr. and Robert Griffing are featured, as well as three Native American miniatures from the Society’s Kenneth Schwartz Collection.

Volunteer John Shipe is responsible for organizing and curating the exhibit, which can be seen through November and December between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and by appointment.

The historical society also will host a talk by John Oyler on “Bridgeville in 1223 AD, the Monongahela Peoples” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 28 in the Chartiers Room at Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department, 370 Commercial St. The event is open to the public.
