Chartiers Valley School District held a covid-19 vaccine clinic for students 16 and older on May 13 at the high school.

Fifty students received their first shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech covid-19 vaccine.

Mikaela Duckstein, director of communications and strategic partnerships for the district, said that while an initial survey indicated a higher number of parents were interested in having their eligible children vaccinated, she was still pleased with the turnout.

“Generally, the community has been appreciative of the district’s efforts to provide accessibility to the vaccine,” she said. “Holding a clinic in the school, during school hours made it a very convenient and hassle-free process for those who wished to receive the vaccination.”

Parental consent was required and submitted a few days before the clinic.

Duckstein said the second dose will be administered June 3, again in the high school gym.

“This clinic was made possible by (high school) nurse Michelle Opferman’s continued work with the state and county health departments as well as local physicians and pharmacies. Giant Eagle Pharmacy provided the vaccines and workers for this particular clinic; their staff ran it efficiently and effectively,” Duckstein said.

While no future clinics in the district are set, both Opferman and Duckstein said they are possible.

“We are currently looking at different options to potentially hold another clinic with the now expanded age groups,” Opferman said.
