The South Fayette community will come together for brews, music and tasty treats on Sept. 19 to raise money for a good cause.

The second annual “Beer for Books” event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at Helicon Brewing in Oakdale, benefiting the South Fayette Township Library.

“It’s like a big South Fayette party at the brewery. It raises money for the library, but it also is a way to bring people together,” said Leslie Riker, fundraising and development coordinator. “A strong library is the hallmark of a strong community.”

Tickets are $20 and include one free Helicon pour and 50% off additional pours throughout the event. All attendees will be entered to win two Penguins tickets.

The fundraiser was the brainchild of library board President Cindy Cox, who enjoys going to breweries across the country with her husband.

“They’re so popular and people like to go to them,” she said.

Helicon owner and operator Chris Brunetti and his family are regulars at the South Fayette library. So, Cox thought it was would be the perfect fit. Brunetti is donating the space and free pours, so that 100% of ticket sales goes to the library.

Last year, during the inaugural event, Beers for Books brought out “a whole new demographic” of people who don’t normally attend library functions, but just wanted to have a good time with the community, said Cox.

“This is more community oriented,” Cox said. “The message is that we have a lot to offer other than just children’s programs. We have adult programs, too. If your WiFi goes down, you can come here and we can help.”

Last year’s event was such a success that people wanted to know when the library was going to have it again, she said.

The evening will include live music by the Dave Iglar Band, which features South Fayette Township’s director of communications and community development, Andrea Iglar.

Food trucks Gyros N’at and Bado’s Pizza Grille & Ale House will be on hand. Both are donating a portion of their proceeds to the library.

There also will be basket raffles for everything from dinner and a show Downtown to a wine lover’s basket to a gift card basket.

Riker said many people and businesses come together to make the night a success.

“It really is a community effort,” she said.

Fundraising for the library is vital for the library to be able to increase programming and improve its facilities, Cox said. In South Fayette, where there’s a goal of building a new library, it’s even more important.

September is “Love Your Library” month, meaning that the library will receive a pro-rated match from The Jack Buncher Foundation for ticket sales.

“It’s just a fun event,” Cox said of Beer for Books. “It’s a good opportunity to come and meet the people that run the library in a very casual atmosphere.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at southfayettelibrary.org/beer-for-books. Tickets also can be purchased at the door. Helicon Brewing is located at 102 Union Ave., Oakdale.
