Bridgeville, Carnegie area offer many opportunities to celebrate the season

There will be numerous opportunities to celebrate and remember the holiday season this winter in the Bridgeville area.

Dec. 5

• Bridgeville Borough will host its annual Winter Blast from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Triangle Park, 431 Station St. At the event, Santa and Mrs. Claus will light the Christmas tree to kick off the holiday season.

• Carnegie’s Carols & Lights returns from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carnegie Borough Building, 1 Veterans Way. There, a tree lighting, light holiday refreshments, letters to Santa, ornament making and pictures with Santa are scheduled.

• Chartiers Valley High School’s cheerleaders and boys basketball team will host a winter clothes drive from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in the concession stand hallway at the high school, 50 Thoms Run Road, Collier. Items being collected include cold-weather gear for children from newborn to age 18. That includes new hats, blankets, gloves and scarves.

The nonprofit organization receiving the donations is Beverly’s PGH.

Dec. 6

• At 10 a.m., Santa will be visiting the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. There will be pictures with Santa, crafts and treats.

• Specially For You cards, a student-run small business from life skills students at Chartiers Valley High School, will return to the annual Handmade Arcade holiday market at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. The CV group will be one of more than 300 artists, craftspeople and makers at the Handmade Arcade’s Holiday Market.

Vendors will have a variety of handmade products, including clothing, artwork, functional and decorative home decor, jewelry and more. The Handmade Arcade is Dec. 5 and Dec. 6; general admission shopping takes place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 6. Tickets are available online at handmadearcade.org/holiday-market.

• Scott Township’s tree lighting in the park will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Scott Park, 1 Park Drive. There will be free cookies and hot chocolate. Live music includes Rustic Harmony from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Bailey Rose from 6 to 7 p.m.

Scott Township Public Library will provide a holiday craft. Miss Cassidy Holiday Music and a Dance Party is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. A balloon artist will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. and The Grinch will make an appearance from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

Santa Claus will arrive on a fire truck. There will be opportunities to take a picture with Santa.

Dec. 7

• Enjoy breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon at the Collier Community Center, 5 Lobaugh St. The cost is $10 for members, $12 for non-members. Children 3 and younger are admitted free. Call 724-693-0780 to register.

Dec. 12

• Friends of the Bridgeville Public Library will host a happy hour around the fireplace fundraiser at 6 p.m. at the library, 505 McMillen St. It will coincide with the Christmas Tree Festival. Trees will be on display starting Dec. 1.

Dec. 13

• An all-day Christmas Celebration will start at 10 a.m. at the Bridgeville Public Library, 505 McMillen St. It will include a visit from Santa, crafts, face painting and more. Email friendsofbpl@aol.com or stop by the circulation desk for more information.

• Scott Township will host a Breakfast with Santa at Scott Park. Time slots are at 10 and 11:30 a.m. Reserve your spot at Scott-Twp.com’s Community Pass. Tickets are $8; children 2 and under are admitted free.

• A Collier Parks and Recreation holiday event will be held Dec. 13 at the Community Center, 5 Lobaugh St. A craft show will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. The holiday event is from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Activities include pictures with Santa, horse-and-carriage rides, light refreshments and kids’ activities. Horse-and-carriage rides are first-come, first-served. People should visit the front desk at the beginning of the event to reserve a time slot. Due to limited seating and time, only two adults are permitted per family for all rides.

• The Carnegie Performing Arts Center will perform The Nutcracker at the Andrew Carnegie Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Dec. 13; 2 p.m. Dec. 14; 7 p.m. Dec. 20; and 2 p.m. Dec. 21.

Chartiers Valley High School sophomore Lana Platt will dance the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Demitry Hood, a Westinghouse Arts Academy freshman, will be her cavalier. Merielle Hooker, a freshman at Shadyside Academy and Scott resident, will dance the part of the Snow Queen.

Lincoln Park student Cora Watkins, of Carnegie, dances the Dew Drop Fairy. Lucy DallVechia, a Chartiers Valley Middle School student, portrays Clara; and Wyatt Westwood, a Quaker Valley Middle School student, will dance the role of the Nutcracker Prince.

Dancers from many community dance schools round out the cast of swirling snowflakes and candy flowers. Monica Ryan, director of the Carnegie Performing Arts Center, is the choreographer.

Tickets cost $20 for adults and $18 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased at carnegieperformingartscenter.com.

• Also at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall at 3 p.m., the Sweaty Already String Band will perform music, and there will be a showing of Jim Henson’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas. Snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased online at carnegiecarnegie.org. The suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for children.

Dec. 17

• Chartiers Valley High School’s orchestra and choir will again perform in the Allegheny County Courthouse Holiday Music program. The performance is scheduled at the courthouse, 436 Grant St.

Dec. 18

• Heidi Beatty and her Holiday Jazz Ensemble will take the stage at 7 p.m. at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. Backing up Beatty are Mark Strickland on guitar, Leon Boykins on bass and Subha Das on drums. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $10 for those younger than 18. Tickets can be purchased at carnegiecarnegie.org.

Dec. 21

• Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department will tour Santa around Bridgeville mid-morning.

Dec. 22

• The Adam Lee-Morgan Jazz Orchestra will host Ellington and Strayhorn’s 1960 interpretation of “The Nutcracker” at 7 p.m. at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. Tickets are available online at carnegiecarnegie.org.

Dec. 23

• The Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club will show the movie “Holiday Affair” at 7 p.m. at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall, 300 Beechwood Ave., Carnegie. Register online at carnegiecarnegie.org.
