Carlynton advances $15M renovation project at Carnegie Elementary
A renovation project at Carlynton’s Carnegie Elementary School is moving forward.
School directors approved construction contracts that total a little less than $15.2 million for a renovation project at Carnegie Elementary, 301 Franklin Ave.
The contracts cover general construction, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work school officials say is necessary to modernize the building and address longstanding needs.
That figure doesn’t include soft costs, which are projected at about 20% and could include architectural and engineering services, inspections, permitting, furnishings and technology.
“Carnegie Elementary is home to a strong academic community, however, the building has identified infrastructure deficiencies that can no longer be addressed through temporary fixes,” the district said in a statement.
“Aging mechanical systems, sanitary line concerns, outdated spaces, and security limitations make renovation both necessary and cost effective. This project will reduce long term maintenance expenses while creating a safer, more modern learning environment.”
The renovation includes: a redesigned “cafetorium,” replacement of sanitary lines, modernizing electrical and plumbing systems, security and ADA accessibility upgrades, relocating and redesigning the library to include dedicated STEAM instructional space, a new classroom dedicated to music instruction, and additional instructional space.
“The district has kept the project tightly focused on essential needs: safety, accessibility, infrastructure and core educational spaces,” the Carlynton statement said. “No unnecessary additions or costly enhancements were included, reflecting a clear commitment to responsible use of taxpayer resources.”
Construction is expected to begin in May, according to the district.
Work will continue through the 2026-27 school year in phases.
The project is anticipated to be complete by July 2027.
Carlynton officials say they will hold special information sessions for parents and the community next spring to review the project, expected impacts during construction, safety measures, and procedures for student drop-off and pickup.
“This project reflects our long-term commitment to providing safe, modern, student centered learning environments,” said Superintendent John Kreider. “Carnegie Elementary is an important part of our district and these renovations will support students for decades to come.”
