Carlynton to restrict student cellphone use during school day
This school year, Carlynton Jr.-Sr. High School will implement a policy restricting personal cellphone use for students.
District officials say the policy follows a yearlong research and community engagement process. They say the policy will foster stronger student focus, mental health and academic engagement.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to student success and safety,” said Superintendent John Kreider. “We know this will be an adjustment, but with the support of our families and community, we are confident this policy will provide lasting benefits for all Carlynton students.”
Beginning this year, students will be issued a Yondr pouch. The pouches are secure, magnetically lockable bags that store personal electronic devices during the school day.
Students will place their devices in the pouch each morning, and will unlock them at the end of the school day.
Kreider said the decision is not punitive but instead aims to provide the best possible learning environment.
“By reducing the constant pull of digital distractions, we are helping students stay more engaged in class, strengthen face-to-face communication skills, and improve overall mental well-being,” Kreider said.
Carlynton officials believe the move will also enhance school safety.
“Law enforcement experts advised that cellphone use during emergencies can cause harm by: distracting students from following first responder directions; overloading communication channels; potentially revealing student locations through noise; (and) allowing attackers to track information through social media,” the district said in a statement.
District families will receive more information on the policy in the coming weeks, including emergency communication procedures, answers to frequently asked questions and resources. Building principals will review expectations with students during the first week of school to ensure a smooth implementation.
Carlynton students return to school Aug. 25.
