Collier Township’s Community Day sounded like a good time to township residents Gordon and Beverly Gathany.

The couple, who moved to Collier from upstate New York seven years ago, frequent the township’s community center and park and looked forward to the Community Day event.

“It’s a nice night out,” Beverly said.

Collier’s Community Day was held June 28 at Collier Park, off Lobaugh Street. The township held a similar event in years past but that faded away a decade ago. This summer, township officials decided to bring back the event, larger than ever before.

The event had more than 50 vendors, a Polynesian fire show and dance, authentic pig roast, a dunk tank by Chartiers Valley’s boys basketball players, local businesses and artisans, children’s games and inflatables and live music from Joe Wodarek & 51 South.

There was also a meet-and-greet with Chartiers Valley graduates T.J. McConnell, who now is a guard for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, and Christian Kuntz, a long snapper for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jeremy “Danger” Mulder of Froggy-FM emceed the event.

Visitors also had the opportunity to meet members of the township’s adminstration and its first responders, including fire and police.

“Many members of our staff are in attendance participating with the community and explaining information, regarding our various departments,” said Assistant Township Manager Dana Slizik.

A fireworks display presented by First National Bank concluded the event.

The Gathanys were impressed with the day.

“I’m in love with this community,” Beverly said. “I’m not leaving. I’m here for life.”
