Two familiar faces in the community have joined Carnegie Council for the next four years.

Former Carnegie Councilman Rick D’Loss and former Carlynton School Board member Tom DiPietro were sworn in Monday, along with incumbent Sue Demko, who was sworn in to serve another term.

“I’ve always been interested in it,” said DiPietro, 65, who has lived in Carnegie for 35 years and served on the Carlynton School Board for six years.

DiPietro said he believes Carnegie has a lot to offer, viewing it as a “little Shadyside.”

“There’s a lot of great things going on, and, hopefully, there can be a lot more,” he said.

DiPietro, who, with his wife, Liz, had two children go through the Carlynton School District, noted the commitment people in Carnegie have to the community.

“I’ve always enjoyed the people. I’ve always enjoyed the town. Everyone that’s involved gives it 100 percent,” he said.

DiPietro takes the seat of longtime councilman Michael Sarsfield, who opted not to run in the last election. Sarsfield received much praise from his colleagues in December for the years of work he put into the community.

DiPietro said he has big shoes to fill, but Sarsfield is No. 1 on his speed dial.

D’Loss, 62, is no stranger to Carnegie Council. He served two terms on the board before taking a break two years ago when his father died in 2016.

D’Loss, a lifelong Carnegie resident whose family has lived in the borough for a century, said it’s his belief that local government should provide clean water, good roads and basic services to its residents.

“It’s just stuff that somebody has to do,” he said. “In my case, I have experience, which is valuable.”

His main focus during his term will be stormwater management and providing services for the less wealthy.

D’Loss is taking over a seat vacated when Theresa Rem-Canofari opted not to seek another term.

“I have a sense of commitment to my town, and I’m stepping up to that,” he said.

During the meeting, council reappointed Demko as president and Phil Boyd as vice president.
