Bridgeville will be replacing steps near Gregg Street that are currently in poor condition.
The borough was awarded $248,780 from the state’s multimodal transportation fund to pay for the project. The grants are awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
Bridgeville’s project was announced by state Sen. Devlin Robinson, R-Bridgeville and state Rep. Anita Kulik, D-Kennedy.
“Each of these projects will significantly enhance pedestrian experiences within our district, providing convenience and safety for residents and visitors alike as they enjoy the diverse amenities and support local businesses across different areas of our community,” Robinson said.
Said Kulik: “These projects are practical steps towards creating communities that are more vibrant and accessible.”
Bridgeville manager Joe Kauer said the borough will use the funding to rebuild a set of city steps that connect Laurel Street and the McLaughlin Run neighborhood to Gregg Avenue and Greenwood Place.
“The current steps have been closed for some time now due to being in very poor condition,” Kauer said. “The project will reconstruct the steps and add a sidewalk to Laurel Street.”
Kauer said the steps serve as a “vital link” for residents along McLaughlin Run Road to walk to the Bridgeville Public Library and community business districts.
In addition, a bicycle “runnel” is a trough that will be built alongside the new steps so a bicyclists can walk their bike alongside the steps instead of carrying it, Kauer said.
The grant is expected to cover about 70% of the project costs, he said.
A construction date has not yet been set.
