Hearing scheduled for Bridgeville downtown zoning
Bridgeville Council will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 to hear comments on a proposal to establish a new “downtown district” for zoning purposes.
The hearing will be held in the borough building, 425 Bower Hill Road.
The proposal can be viewed during normal business hours at the borough office or on the borough’s website, bridgevilleboro.com.
Old St. Luke’s concert series
The concert series is back at Old St. Luke’s Church in Scott.
Concerts include: Sept. 28, harpist Marissa Knaub Avon with Thomas Godfrey on flute and Warren Davidson on viola; Oct. 19, Academy String Quartet “Friends of Ukraine”; Nov. 9, Daphne Alderson, chanteuse; March 22, Academy String Quartet “Domestic and Imported Lyricism”; April 26, Trio Sine Nomine; May 3, Taburaški Sastav Ponoć America’s Premier Tambura Band.
Concerts begin at 2 p.m. and are held at the church, 330 Old Washington Pike, Scott.
The suggested donation is $20.

Chartiers Valley comings and goings
A number of personnel moves were approved by the Chartiers Valley School Board during its meetings July 22 and Aug. 12.
Teacher appointments include Jamie Grimes, high school science; Ryan Ponchione and Zane Snyder, high school math; Berardino Intieri, middle and high school gifted; Colby Yaglowski, sixth grade; Nathan Wood, middle school physical education; and William Hildabrand, middle school English Language Arts.
Teachers Deanna Blake, Kristen Cunningham, Ella Coleman and Abigail Stewart were hired at the intermediate school; and Halle Lindh, Kylie Mihalov, Emma Davin, Giovanna Sunseri, Gabriella Ciccone-Deluca, Nicole Ward, Paige Krupp and Josiah Burkett were hired at the primary school.
Brittany Miller was hired as a food service general worker, and Edwin Rowse was named facilities director. Debra Byron, Michele Lamb, Brittany Miller and Erica Winger were hired as general workers. Other hirings included Sneha Gudi as a playground aide to a paraprofessional; and Louann Chapple, Sherrisa Johnson, Chrissy Nelson and Jim Zamiska as bus drivers.
The board accepted the resignations of Frank Zissis, STEM consultant; Cate Gannon, middle school assistant swim coach; Hollie McAleer, bus driver; and Dawn Hicken, paraprofessional.
Supplemental appointments include Hannah Roadway, vocal director for the middle school play; Frank Tomalewski, middle school boys soccer assistant coach; Shannon Torres, middle school girls soccer assistant coach; Kenny Sickles, junior high boys basketball coach; David Oddi, varsity baseball coach; Cullen Vereb, varsity girls’ volleyball coach; Aaron Glasser, assistant volleyball coach; Chris Santilli, middle school swim assistant coach; and Donald Washington, Jason Sneed, David Leclarc, Brandon Stephenson and Devin Powell as middle school football assistant coaches.
Movie in the Park
Collier Parks and Recreation will host a screening of the movie “Migration” on Sept. 6 at Collier Community Park, 5 Lobaugh St.
The event starts at 8 p.m., and Kona Ice will be available until 9 p.m. The movie starts at dusk.
Admission is free.
Heidelberg fall festival
The Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department is coordinating its fall festival, from 1 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at 456 First St.
The family-oriented event includes entertainment, food and games.

Trips approved
Chartiers Valley school directors approved trips during their July 22 and Aug. 12 meetings.
The high school showband, chorus and orchestra will go on a spring trip to Nashville, Tenn., from April 9 to 14. There is no cost to the district.
The Thespian Society will travel to the annual state conference Jan. 2 to 4 at Parkland High School in Allentown. The trip is being paid for by fundraisers and Thespian members.
The Dance Troupe will attend UDA Nationals, held in Orlando, Fla., from Jan. 28 to Feb. 2. According to the request, UDA Nationals is the most competitive dance competition available for high school teams. There is no cost to the district.
The board also approved the cross country team attending an invitational in Preston County, W.Va., and the boys basketball team to participate in the Smithville (Ohio) High School tournament this winter.
Shade tree commission
Five people were appointed to Bridgeville’s new shade tree commission.
Council in July appointed Courtney Tolmer, Virginia Schneider, Kayla Lawrence, Alison Thomas and Jen Brilmyer to the commission. Typically, shade tree commissions help guide the planting, care and preservation of trees in public spaces, such as parks and rights-of-way.
Vendors sought for Scott’s Octoberfest
Scott is taking reservations for vendors who want to participate in the township’s annual Octoberfest.
Octoberfest will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Scott Park.
For vendors, the cost is $25 for an indoor space or $20 for an outdoor space.

Library teens needed
Bridgeville Public Library’s 2025-26 school year teen volunteer application is now open.
The volunteer application closes Sept. 15 or once the library receives 15 applications, whichever comes first.

Dek hockey league
Collier is hosting a dek hockey league for boys and girls ages 6 to 13 at Collier Community Park, 5 Lobaugh St.
The season runs from Oct. 5 to Nov. 23. The cost is $40 for members or $50 for non-members. Register online at colliertownship.net.
Each team will receive one practice and one game per week, and a uniform. All players are required to bring their own equipment. Coaches are needed at every level. Practice and game times are to be announced.

Arts walk
Stroll the streets of Carnegie during the annual arts walk 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 13.
The event, held on Carnegie’s Main Street, features live art demonstrations, local music and performances.
Fall craft show
Save the date for the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fall craft show.
The show is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16 at the fire department’s Chartiers Room, 370 Commercial St., Bridgeville.
Admission is free.
School improvement plan
Chartiers Valley school directors approved a targeted school improvement plan for the high school this school year.
A TSI plan functions as an early warning system for at-risk groups of students. The high school was designated as a TSI school due to the “economically disadvantaged” subgroup demonstrating at-risk scores.
The plan outlines targeted goals in the areas of ELA, math and attendance.
American Legion Helping Hands Benefit Run
The Legion Riders at the American Legion Post 84, 412 Jane St., Carnegie, will sponsor the American Legion Helping Hands Benefit Run on Sept. 6.
Registration for riders is 9 a.m., with kickstands up at noon.
The cost is $20 for non-riders. The event includes food, beer, live music, a 50-50 raffle, silent auction and more. Proceeds will assist two community members with their medical expenses.

Historical Society presentations
Jim Weinschenker will present on the “Waynesburg and Washington Railroad” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department’s Chartiers Room, 370 Commercial St, Bridgeville.
The presentation is the Bridgeville Area Historical Society’s September program.
Carnegie Car Cruise
The Carnegie Police Department will host a car cruise from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 20.
The cruise will take place at Carnegie Municipal Park, 21 Cooks Lane.
South Hills Women’s Club
The South Hills Women’s Club will meet at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 8 at Scott Township Lodge, Park Drive, Carnegie. Following a brief meeting, the guest speaker will be former Pittsburgh Police officer and detective Brenda Tate.
This is a new location and new time for meetings.
Tate distinguished herself as one of the first African American women to serve in Pittsburgh. She was hand selected to serve in the Witness and Dignitary Protection Unit, providing dignitary protection to presidents, kings, queens, Rosa Parks and the Dalai Lama, as well as high-level government officials and dignitaries. She will discuss her career and her book “Journal of a Black Woman in Blue: Navigating Abuse, Addiction, Racism & Sobriety.”
At the May 6 Installation Dinner, the club presented its 2024-25 charity check to Pennies From Heaven. Established in 2001, the Pennies From Heaven Foundation is a local grassroots charity whose mission is to provide financial assistance to families of children admitted to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Its goal is to ease financial hardship for parents so they can remain with their sick child for the entire hospital admission. Every penny donated goes directly to a family in need.

Holiday craft and vendor show
A holiday craft and vendor show is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 in the auditorium at All Saints Church, 514 Third Ave., Carnegie.
More than 50 crafters and vendors are participating.

Country line dancing
Save the date for a country line dance from 6 to 11 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department, 456 First St.
Doors open at 6 p.m., lessons are from 7 to 8 p.m. and dancing is from 8 to 11 p.m.
Tickets will go on sale soon. All proceeds benefit the fire department.

Pittsburgh Classic Movie Club’s free summer outdoor movie series continues at the Bridgeville Public Library, 505 McMillan St.
Films are shown outdoors on the library’s patio, weather permitting. People should bring a lawn chair. Movies start at dusk.
“The Thomas Crown Affair” will be showing on Sept. 12.
Tenured teachers
Eight Chartiers Valley School District teachers have obtained tenure.
They are: Katrina Benson, Marena Grondziowski, Alyssa Hoffman, Abigail Schifano, Vanessa Dillon, Allison Kremm, Megan George and Lindsey Henefeld.
Cups and cones
Carnegie Mayor Stacie Riley, police Chief Jeffrey Kennedy and borough police officers are inviting the community to meet over ice cream.
The event, dubbed “Cups and Cones,” will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at Scoops in Carnegie, 241 E. Main St.
Families welcome. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Guided nature center walk
Allegheny Park Rangers will lead a hike through the Green Tree Nature Center, 1194 Hillcrest Ave., for a tour on native and non-native invasive species. Participants will be shown how to identify common invasive species and non-natives as well as basic control methods to help protect native species.
The walk will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7.

CV grant writer; magazine agreement
Chartiers Valley school board approved an agreement with IN Community Magazine, Inc. for quarterly publications at a cost of $400 per page, per issue.
The board also approved an agreement with Andrew Fee to be the district’s grant writer.
Stress and tension control
Adults 18 and older can register at a stress and tension control workshop at Collier Community Center, 5 Lobaugh St.
It runs from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays from Sept. 25 to Nov. 13. Registration is required and can be done at the township website, colliertownship.net.
Registration is free for community center members and $20 for non-members.
Trivia Night
A trivia night will be held at the Scott Park Community Room to benefit Scott Township Public Library.
The event is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19. It is intended for adults.
Tickets are available at the library, 301 Lindsay Road. Early-bird pricing, from Aug. 15 to 31, is $15 per person. Tickets after Aug. 31 cost $20 per person. Ticket purchases are requested by Sept. 1. The event is cash only the day of the event.
