Carnegie Borough awarded funding to rehabilitate Main Street bridge
Rep. Anita Kulick, D-Allegheny, announced Jan. 16 that Carnegie earned $150,000 to rehabilitate the Carnegie Main Street bridge.
The bridge was originally built in 1967.
“By repairing the Carnegie Main Street Bridge, we make our roadways safer for those traveling through our area,” Kulick said.
The grant is from the state’s Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund, which falls under the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County and Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Financing Authority.
Bridgeville gets two new police officers
Bridgeville has two new full-time police officers.
The borough recently hired Robert Spencer and Jeffrey Slagle to the police department.
This increased the roster from eight to nine full-time police officers.
Scott reorganizes
Scott commissioners retained their leadership for 2024 during a reorganization meeting Jan. 2.
Commissioners named Stacey Altman as the board’s president and Nicholas Seibel as vice president.
Also at the meeting, District Judge Craig Stephens swore-in Altman; Seibel; and commissioners Eileen Meyers, Thomas Castello and Kathy Gazda. All won reelection in November.
Commissioners also retained Denise Fitzgerald as township manager and secretary; Lisha Mihalko as assistant township secretary and administration supervisor; John Vogel and law firm Tucker Arensberg as township solicitor; and Marie Hartman and Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering as township engineer.
Anthony Roscoe was reappointed to chairman of the vacancy board.
Commissioner Brandon Edwards was appointed as Scott’s representative to the South Hills Area Council of Government Board of Directors, Franchising Authority Board and Joint Rate Review Board. Seibel was named the alternate to those boards.
Chiurazzi reappointed as Collier board president
Collier commissioners on Jan. 8 appointed Wayne Chiurazzi as board president and Mary Ann Cupples as vice president.
Also at the meeting, commissioners Dawnlee Vaughn and Gabriel Benvenuti were sworn-in.
The board also accepted the resignation of commissioner Tim Young, effective Dec. 31.
South Fayette seeks emergency management coordinator
An emergency management coordinator is needed is South Fayette Township.
Municipalities are required to appoint an emergency management coordinator to oversee planning, training and preparation during non-disaster times and to act as the Emergency Operations Center coordinator during emergencies.
The position is unpaid.

Volunteers interested in being considered for the role can complete the application, found on the township’s website, and email it to township Manager John M. Barrett by 8 a.m. on Feb. 12.
Chartiers Valley School Board appoints Mariano as chairman
Darren Mariano will be Chartiers Valley school board’s president, and Herbert Ohliger will be the vice president for 2024.
The unanimous appointments were made during the board’s reorganization meeting.
CV Holiday Card Winners
Two Chartiers Valley School District student artists were featured on CV’s Holiday Greeting Cards.
Artwork on the card’s cover is by Supraja Vijayan, a second grader. Inside artwork is by fifth grader Nakshatra Thomas.
Thomas’ artwork won the holiday contest at the Omni William Penn. She was the guest of honor at the Light Up Night at the hotel and was presented with a $100 gift card and signed memorabilia from Pittsburgh Steeler Calvin Austin.
Carnegie reorganizes
Phil Boyd was appointed Carnegie Council president and Sue Demko was named vice president.
The appointments were made during a reorganization meeting Jan. 8.
Other appointments include Nate Boring as solicitor; KLH Engineers as engineer; Jordan Tax Service as tax collection firm; and Hosack, Specht, Muetzel & Wood as auditor.
At a meeting Jan. 15, council appointed Boyd as delegate, and councilman Terry Lee and borough manager Steve Beuter as alternates, to the Allegheny County Southwest Collection District.
Councilman Tom DiPietro will be primary delegate and councilman Emmett Freshwater will be alternate delegate to the Char-West Council of Governments.
Beuter is the appointed official delegate and councilman Peter Mullins and Mayor Stacie Riley were named alternate delegates to the Congress of Neighboring Communities Group (CONNECT). Boyd, DiPietro and Lee were municipal representatives to the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall Board of Trustees.
Mullins was appointed the primary borough council representative and Freshwater was named an alternate representative for the borough’s Shade Tree Commission.
DiPietro and Riley were appointed municipal representatives to the Carnegie Community Development Corporation.
Concordia of the South Hills to host open house
Concordia of the South Hills will host an open house on Sunday, Jan. 28 and Monday, Jan. 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the community, 1300 Bower Hill Road.
The event begins with an informational session, titled “What Makes Retirement Living at Concordia the Best of the Best?” followed by tours, refreshments and music from Pianist Craig Zinger from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
The event, refreshments and parking are free.
Registration is preferred but walk-ins will be accepted.

CV coffee with the superintendent
Chartiers Valley School District is inviting the public to enjoy a cup of coffee with Superintendent Johannah Vanatta on Jan. 31.
The event takes place at 9 a.m. at the high school.

Life Line Screening at Carnegie
A life line screening will be held at the Carnegie Borough Building, 1 Veterans Way, on Feb. 15.
It will offer four screenings to identify risk for stroke, heart disease and other chronic conditions.

Carnegie historical exhibits
The Historical Society of Carnegie, 1 W. Main St., has three interesting and informative exhibits.
• The Colonel Robert Sawhill Center of Carnegie Military Heritage — an exhibit of historical memorabilia of former Vietnam POW, and Carnegie native, Colonel Sawhill.
• The Honus Wagner Museum is dedicated to the Pirates baseball great and Carnegie native. This enhanced exhibit features photo-ops with game-played memorabilia.
• Miniature Main Street Exhibit, is a 75-foot, hand-crafted, wooden diorama of Carnegie’s business district in the 1940s and ’50s, built for Carnegie’s 100th anniversary in 1994.

Captain Thomas Espy Post tours
The Captain Thomas Espy Post at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall has tours every Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Capt. Thomas Espy Post 153 of the Grand Army of the Republic served local Civil War veterans for more than 60 years.
Tours are free and open to the public.

“Oppenheimer” will be shown at 7 p.m., Jan. 25 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall.
This epic saga examines the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb, from his early research to his role in the Manhattan Project to his downfall.

Four Chaplains Ceremony
The Four Chaplains Ceremony is set for 4 p.m. Feb. 3 at the American Legion Post 82.
The Four Chaplains were four World War II chaplains who died rescuing others when the American ship SS Dorchester sank on Feb. 3, 1943.
The chaplains helped the other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supplies ran out.
The chaplains joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship.

A pancake breakfast is available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 4 at St. Raphael the Archangel Church at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Worship Site.

Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait
Check out Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait with narrator Rocky Bleier, at 3 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall.
Aaron Copland composed Lincoln Portrait in 1942, during the dark, frightening years of World War II.
The orchestra score incorporates some of Lincoln’s most gripping oratory, with the narrator speaking over the music.
A dessert and coffee reception in the Lincoln Gallery follows the performance.
Advance tickets cost $20.
Tickets at the door cost $25.

Bridgeville Historical Society presentations on tap
The Bridgeville Area Historical Society’s monthly speakers program is back.
On Jan. 28, Dick Gaetano will present “The Legendary Route 66,” and on Feb. 25, Warren Merritt will present “Bridgeville Mining.” Both are at 1:30 p.m.
On March 26 at 7:30 p.m., Brady Crytzer will present ”The Whiskey Rebellion: A distilled history of an American Crisis.”
Events are held at the BVFD Chartiers Room and are free.
