Civil service commission members needed
Bridgeville is seeking applications for residents interested in volunteering as a member of the borough’s Civil Service Commission.
The commission administers the civil service exam to applicants for positions and promotion within the police department. It also is responsible for establishing minimum qualifications for police positions, testing applicants for appointments and holding hearings in cases of dismissals or reduction in rank of police officers.
The commission has three members and up to three alternates appointed by borough council. Members serve six-year terms. Meetings are as-needed.
Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest and resume to Borough Manager Joe Kauer at 425 Bower Hill Road or jkauer@bridgevilleboro.com by Dec. 19.
Parkway West CTC
The Chartiers Valley School Board approved the purchase of property and financing for the Parkway West Career and Technology Center at the former Pittsburgh Technical College in North Fayette.
Parkway West officials told school directors Oct. 28 they are pursuing the plan to meet the growing needs of the vo-tech in a fiscally responsible way.
Twelve school districts send students to Parkway West. Chartiers Valley has more students attending than any other district.
The plans must be approved by all 12 jointure districts.
American Legion scholarships
The Pennsylvania American Legion is taking entries for its annual essay contest. Winners will receive $3,500, $3,000 or $2,500 scholarships.
The contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12. Students can be from public, private, parochial, cyber/charter or be home-schooled.
Students must submit their essay by mail or hand delivery to their local American Legion post by Jan. 7, for those in grades 9 to 12. Carlynton personnel moves
Carlynton School Board made some personnel decisions at its meetings in October.
Appointments include Phil May, day custodial/maintenance shift at Carnegie; Kristine Jones, high school food worker; Rebekah Shafer, lunchroom/playground aide at Carnegie; Sascha Wunderlin, food worker; and Ronnie Boling, high school custodian.
Supplemental appointments included DeQuay Canton and Goinni Jones, assistant boys basketball; Wendy Steiner, National Honors Society sponsor; Roman Tortorea and Michael Steinmetz, assistant varsity football; Frank Deutsch, seventh grade girls basketball; and Elizabeth Jones, varsity swim.
The board accepted resignations from Sherree “Joy” Braden, long-term substitute nurse; Sean Gabster, custodian; Susan Straub, food worker; Robert Charley, custodial/maintenance; Kristen Fischer, junior high track assistant; and LeNora Emmanuelson, musical director.
Donations for veterans
The Collier Community Center is assisting the VA with accepting donations for veterans.
Needed items include personal care products, snacks and men’s and women’s clothing. A full list can be found on the Collier Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
People can donate at the front desk of the community center, 5 Lobaugh St., during operating hours. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 8.
12 Days of Giveaways
Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department will hold a “12 Days of Giveaways” raffle fundraiser from Dec. 1 to 12.

Free parking offered
Bridgeville’s Parking Authority will offer free public parking Nov. 29 — Small Business Saturday — and from Dec. 17 to Jan. 1.
Substitute custodian rate
Carlynton School District has a new pay rate for substitute custodians.
Substitute custodians will make $17 an hour for a 7½-hour workday, inclusive of an unpaid lunch period.
Old St. Luke’s concert series
The concert series is back at Old St. Luke’s Church in Scott.
Remaining concerts include: March 22, Academy String Quartet “Domestic and Imported Lyricism”; April 26, Trio Sine Nomine; and May 3, Taburaški Sastav Ponoć America’s Premier Tambura Band.
Concerts begin at 2 p.m. and are held at the church, 330 Old Washington Pike, Scott.

Donations
Mattel donated 25 Hot Wheels STEM kits for Carnegie Elementary; and the T-Mobile Store in Robinson donated 100 boxes of new Kleenex tissues for the elementary schools.
School directors approved the donations Oct. 14.
Virtual Holiday Paint & Sip
The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA is hosting its Sixth Annual Virtual Holiday Paint & Sip Celebration to benefit MGA’s free patient support services.
This year’s event will be held 7-8:30 p.m. Dec. 11. For a $50 donation to MGA, participants will receive a link to participate in the virtual holiday paint and sip event, the supplies needed to create their own snowflake-inspired art, and two bottles of wine from Kavic Winery in Carnegie. The creation of the art will be led by art therapist Kristy Walter and the wine tasting will be led by Michael and Patricia Kavic.
Myasthenia Gravis is often called the “Snowflake Disease” because it manifests itself differently in every patient.

South Fayette teacher recognized
Jeannie Scott, an English teacher at South Fayette High School, was selected as the Pat Freiermuth Teacher of the Month for September.
The award was established by Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth through the Freiermuth Fund and recognizes teachers for their dedication, creativity and commitment to students.
Scott was nominated by Sarah Kornacki, a 2024 South Fayette graduate.
The award includes Steelers game tickets, merchandise, $1,000 for her classroom, and entrance in a drawing to have Freiermuth visit Scott’s classroom.
Collier leaf collection
Leaf collection in Collier ends Dec. 8.
Leaves must be raked curbside or to the edge of the residency. Pickup will be via the township’s “Leaf-Vac” along residential streets only. Do not have rocks or sticks in the leaf pile.
Leaves may be bagged in brown leaf or garden bags only — no plastic bags. After Dec. 8, all leaves must be bagged with brown leaf bags.
Dates are approximate and subject to change dependent on weather.
Rotary scholarship
The Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year to high school seniors in Allegheny and Beaver counties. Those attending New Kensington-Arnold, Kiski Area and Burrell Area High Schools and The Kiski School in Westmoreland County are also eligible. Vocational students, G.E.D. students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools are also eligible.
Students must have a 2.5 or higher grade point average and must also complete an essay that highlights their community/school service as part of the application submission.

Carlynton fall play and spring musical
Carlynton Jr.-Sr. High School’s fall play will be “A Christmas Chaos.”
The musical is scheduled for Dec. 10 to 14 with the senior citizen performance on Dec. 11.
The spring musical will be “Seussical the Musical.”
Girls golf
Chartiers Valley will petition the WPIAL to create a girls golf team for the 2026-27 school year.
Girls golf was established as a club sport at the school last fall.
Superintendent forums
Carlynton Superintendent John Kreider is hosting parent and community forums this school year.
Remaining forums are scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Jr.-Sr. High School Cougar Collaboration Center; 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Crafton Elementary; and 6 p.m. March 3 at the Carnegie Elementary Library.

Chartiers Valley personnel moves
Chartiers Valley school directors approved the hirings of Donald Fischer, intermediate school custodian; Neha Thakur, intermediate school playground aide; Gulmirakhon Yuldasevabid, high school temporary custodian; Colleen Conn, CDL driver; Linda Solman, driver and Mary Ellen Peduzzi, in-home instructor.
The board accepted the resignation of Jordyn Muma, school psychologist; Mark Thomas and Theresa Alaimo.
Athletic hirings include William Weitzel, varsity softball assistant; Christopher Santilli, varsity swimming; and Willie Corso, varsity baseball assistant. The board accepted the resignation of Morgan Soulia, middle school swimming coach. Zoe Mangan was appointed as an intern.
The moves were approved at the school board’s Oct. 28 and Nov. 11 meetings.
CV trips
The following travel requests were approved by the Chartiers Valley School Board:
• Chartiers Valley’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports team will travel to the Allegheny Intermediate Unit in Homestead on Dec. 3.
• Amy Bouch will attend an Empowerment Collaborative Coaching Development Program conference from Jan. 22 to 23 in South Charleston, W.Va., and a Literacy Love: “Reading and Writing Beside Our Students” conference on March 11 at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
• Middle school students will attend the Empowerment Collaborative Coaching Development Program from Jan. 22 to 23, in South Charleston, W.Va.
•Deidra Stepko, primary school principal and Marc Hubert, Cyber Academy principal and safety and security coordinator, will attend the Annual Conference for Title I staff at the Sheraton Station Square from Jan. 26 to 28.
• Interested seventh through 12th grade students will attend the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English poetry slam on April 9 at Beaver Area High School.
• Interested sixth grade students will attend the WPCTE English festival on May 20 at La Roche University; and seventh through 12th graders will travel on May 21.
Park restrooms closed for winter
Restroom facilities at Cook School, McLaughlin Run and Chartiers parks in Bridgeville are now closed for the season.
The facilities have been winterized until next year, according to the borough. This also includes water fountains at those parks, as well as Triangle Park.
Building project
Carnegie Council is seeking a $700,000 statewide local share assessment grant to be used for repairs at the Carnegie Borough Building, 1 Veterans Way.
The project includes roof replacement and repair, and generator installation.
Orthopaedic agreement
The Chartiers Valley School Board approved a physician agreement with Allegheny Health Network’s Orthopaedic Institute, specifically, Dr. Todd D. Franco.
The agreement will provide services on an as-needed basis for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years.
According to AHN, Franco specializes in providing care for sports-related injuries and expertise in concussion, back, neck and hip pain, joint injections, shoulder, tendon, muscle and knee injuries, and ligament tears.
Franco attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, did his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and completed his fellowship in sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital.
Franco is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He also serves as the lead team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Website upgrade
Chartiers Valley School District tapped Edilo, a web design company that specializes in school district communications, for a districtwide website solution.
School directors approved the agreement at their Nov. 11 meeting.
Book donations
Chartiers Valley Intermediate School will donate more than 4,000 library books to the Bridgeville Friends of the Library program.
The books were either outdated, never checked out or both, and were identified by the librarian and administration to be donated, according to the district.
The initiative is part of a plan to reorganize and re-shelve materials to create additional space for computer science and makerspaces.
Red Kettle volunteers needed
The Salvation Army Chartiers Valley Service Center needs volunteers to ring bells at its red kettles to raise money for services in the community.

Money donated through the red kettle campaign goes toward local food and heating assistance, according to the Salvation Army.
National Honor Society
Carlynton held a National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Nov. 12.

Carlynton runner medals
Carlynton High School junior Ethan Moldovan ran his way to a medal at the state cross country meet held Nov. 1 in Hershey.
Moldovan ran a 17:18 and finished 18th among 257 in the Class 1A meet.
Maria Leithauser, Ava Pancake and Lani Blevins represented Carlynton in the girls Class 1A meet.
Leithauser, a sophomore, finished 119th with a time of 22:58; Pancake, a senior, was 166th with a time of 23:43; and Blevins, a sophomore, came in 168th with a time of 23:48.
