Painters Run Road – just west of its intersection with McMillan Road in Upper St. Clair – was unexpectedly closed today. While completing drainage work there, crews encountered an unmarked underground mine void that might affect the road’s stability. As a result, Public Works will keep that section of road closed until it can ensure that it is safe for drivers.
Motorists in Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon will potentially have one less traffic interruption. Beginning July 31, paving work on Painters Run Road will occur during night hours – 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday-Saturday. The work, which is part of an ongoing project, will take place between Bower Hill Road in Scott Township and Cedar Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon.
It is expected to last at least two weeks.
According to a press release from the Allegheny County Department of Public Works, the decision to perform the work at night was made to reduce the time needed to complete the project, improve pavement quality and mitigate potential traffic issues. The department worked with the affected municipalities for a waiver of their noise ordinances and is notifying property owners who might be impacted by the night work.
However, crews will also continue to work during daylight hours – 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday. After the 1800 Block of Painters Run Road is reopened, drivers can expect to experience short stoppages in work zones. Flaggers will be used to control traffic, and drivers are urged to use caution in the area.
The project, which is now expected to end in August, includes structural repairs to Painters Run Bridge No. 3, Painters Run Bridge No. 9, drainage work, base repairs, milling and paving, pavement markings and guide rail installation.
