South Fayette officials plan to spend $1.5 million to pave at least 30 roads and several alleys.

Commissioners recently authorized the township’s paving program to go out for bid.

The goal is to award the project at the April 14 meeting, according to commission president Gwen Rodi.

“We’ve always committed to spend at least $1 million toward our paving program until we get our roads in a good rotation, a good schedule so all of our roads stay well-maintained,” Rodi said. “Our roads were in such disrepair for years.”

Roads had gotten so bad that the township commissioned Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering to do a roadway maintenance study, which was released in 2015, in order to craft a 10-year street improvement plan.

The study is available on the “Roads & Traffic” section of the township’s website, southfayettepa.com.

“Our public works goes out (and) identifies our areas that need additional repair on top of what’s already scheduled,” Rodi added.

Commissioners years ago approved a one-mill tax hike to help fund the paving program.

Streets expected to be paved this summer include:

• Nesbit Road from Battle Ridge Road to the Collier line.

• Shady Lane from Route 978 to the dead end.

• South Avenue from the North Fayette line to the dead end.

• Alpine Road from Hickory Grade Road to Cole Pit Run Road.

Other roads include an alley from Wabash Avenue to Orchard Drive and two unnamed alleys from Cherry Street to the end.

Portions of Abele Road, Emerson and Villani drives were on an alternate paving list, which may be added depending on bid costs.

“The roads were assessed and their conditions were recorded, and they were prioritized based on condition,” said Andrea Iglar, South Fayette community development director. “Each year we take that into account and try to do some of each type of roads, neighborhood roads, main roads, a combination of those.”
