Many restaurants throughout Allegheny County are struggling to stay afloat during the covid-19 pandemic.
State and county officials have limited alcoholic beverage sales and pushed for outdoor dining and takeout due to safety concerns.
South Fayette officials have taken to bingo to help give township food purveyors a boost in business.
They launched Takeout Bingo, a game in which people buy something at select businesses, complete a row on the game card and win prizes.
The idea came from Paula Willis, the township’s parks and recreation director.
“I saw some other examples of other communities doing things for local businesses,” Willis said. “There was a lot of action on Facebook, and we’ve already had a few people submit their boards. Most of (the businesses) appreciated the efforts and asked if there’s anything else that they can do. A few restaurants donated gift cards for the grand prize.”
The game started Monday and already has a grand prize winner, Cassidy Gerhardt, who was the first to complete the game and patronize at least three businesses within 48 hours.
People can still play and receive a township swag filled with South Fayette items. Prize bags are available while supplies last.
“We’ve had such a good response to the takeout bingo that wee we’ll consider doing another one,” said Andrea Iglar, director of communications and community development for South Fayette. “The residents say, ‘it’s a great idea,’ and they really like that we’re trying to support our local businesses. We know that restaurants especially are having a challenging time lately due to covid-19. We thought this would be something fun that people could do to help support restaurants in South Fayette.”
Jeff Lynn, owner of the restaurant and bar Tap That along Millers Run Road, said he awaits players getting takeout and checking off his square.
“That helps generate people,” said Lynn. “We’re abiding by all the rules and just doing what we can.”
Other businesses in the game include Bee’z Bistro & Pub, Hunner’s Pizza & Restaurant, Dunkin’, Starbucks, McDonald’s, Portman’s Farm Market, Girl Friday Cooking Co. Chipotle, Blaze Pizza and First Watch.
