South Fayette-area leaders celebrate a groundbreaking of The Wembley Club in the township Sept. 8.

A new, 68,000-square-foot racquet and fitness club is set to open next fall in South Fayette.

The Wembley Club held a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 8 in South Fayette’s Newbury Market, on a 4-acre site behind the gas pumps of BJ’s Wholesale Club.

“We are a more personal, charismatic, interactive experience than anywhere else,” said David Barr, of the Wembley Club. “The amount of interpersonal activity is really unique.

“In Cleveland, people compare us to ‘Cheers,’ where everyone knows your name.”

All told, the South Fayette location will be two levels, and include five indoor tennis courts which can also be used as 10 indoor pickleball courts, plus three paddle courts, according to the township.

Five workout studios will host yoga, spin, group fitness, Pilates and boxing; and a 10,000-square-foot equipment floor will offer weights and cardio.

“We offer a first-class, world-class fitness experience,” Barr said.

South Fayette will be the club’s second location, according to Barr. The first is in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Barr said The Wembley Club studied 50 markets for expansion and landed on the Pittsburgh region. There’s a “lot to like about South Fayette,” he said.

“We felt the South Fayette community was exceptionally welcoming,” he said. “We think it’s a great opportunity to be part of the community, a growing community.”

In Ohio, members refer to the club as their second home, Barr said.

“We’re more than a place people work out,” he said. “We’re a vibe of positivity, inspiration and friendships. It becomes a hub for the community — a social hub in addition to an exercise hub.”
