Chartiers Valley Odyssey of Mind team finishes 5th in state
The Chartiers Valley Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team won third place in the Western PA regional competition.
With the lofty standing, the students qualified for the state finals, held April 1 at Lock Haven University, where they finished fifth.
Team members are seventh-graders Adam Rubritz, Brooke Bittner and Luisa Bautista, and sixth-graders Liam Franchick, Isaac Janco, Connor Asti and Leo Burdette.
Primary penny drive
The penny drive at Chartiers Valley Primary School was started to help fund a Colt Closet, which is a closet of supplies that can be used to help families in need, with items such as shoes, shampoo and deodorant available.
Primary school students used their monthly positive behavior theme of perseverance to lead the penny drive. The total collected was $544.03, or more than 50,000 pennies.
Principal Deidra Stepko, school counselor Mary Krepp, librarian Rebecca Forkner, and resource officer Dan Elway took the pennies to a local Coinstar to convert the cards into a gift card, which will be used to make purchases for the Colt Closet.
