Contract change for Crawford Pool bathhouse saves Shaler $24K

A change in contracts for the construction of a new bathhouse at Crawford Pool in Shaler’s Kiwanis Park will save the township about $24,000.

According to township Solicitor Anna Jewart, Shaler was required to separate contracts for the bathhouse project’s electrical and plumbing work from the $2.21 million contract awarded to TBI Contracting of McKeesport.

That lowered the contract with TBI by about $390,463, to $1.82 million. The two new, separate contracts total $366,500, making the new total cost $2.19 million, about 1.1% less.

At their meeting Tuesday, Dec. 9, Shaler commissioners awarded the plumbing contract, $221,500, to East End Plumbing & Mechanical of Richland.

The electrical contract, $145,000, was awarded to TBI.

The 61-year-old bathhouse dated from when the pool opened in 1964. It was demolished this year to make way for a new bathhouse, now under construction and expected to be ready for the opening of the season on Memorial Day weekend.

Bathhouse brick fundraiser

The township is selling commemorative bricks that will be included in the walkway to the new bathhouse. Proceeds from the bricks, priced at $125 each, will go toward the bathhouse, township Manager Judy Kording said.

The bricks, promoted as a way to honor family, friends and loved ones, can be engraved with up to three lines and 16 characters per line. The deadline to order is Jan. 31.
