Century III Mall is coming down.

Demolition has officially begun on the site which was closed in 2019, according to TribLive news partners WTAE.

The mall has since been the target of vandals and others sneaking into the property.

It was condemned by West Mifflin Council in 2023.

In January, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala filed criminal charges of causing or risking a catastrophe and making a public nuisance against the owners.

Allegheny County Judge Jill E. Rangos earlier this month gave mall owners a month to show good-faith progress in razing the nuisance property. Or, Rangos said she would move forward with a proceeding that could have allowed the District Attorney’s Office to take possession and have it demolished with public funds.

Crews started Saturday knocking down parts of the mall’s parking garage.

West Mifflin Mayor Christopher Kelly said it’s a great step forward for the community.

When demolition of the parking lot is complete, crews will tackle the mall once a permit is approved by the health department. Kelly expects the project to take years.
