A fire broke out at an apartment complex in Wilkinsburg early Wednesday.

Two people were taken to the hospital following a fire early Wednesday in Wilkinsburg, officials said.

Crews responded to a reported apartment fire in the 1200 block of Wood Street, near North Avenue, around 12:10 a.m. Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesman Maurice Matthews said first responders reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the building, which was occupied.

Firefighters escorted two people out of the building and they were taken to a hospital, officials said. An update on their conditions was not provided.

Crews had the fire under control around 1 a.m., officials said. Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV said the apartment building was evacuated, but residents eventually were allowed back inside.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating to determine what caused the fire.
