State police ID woman killed in fiery Parkway East crash
Pennsylvania State Police have identified the driver killed early Monday on Interstate 376 in Pittsburgh as a Monroeville resident.
Keturah Griffin died after a pickup truck hit her disabled sedan on the Parkway East.
Griffin’s car broke down in the eastbound lanes around 5:15 a.m., state police Trooper Rocco Gagliardi told TribLive. He said she switched on her four-way flashers and waited inside her car.
A pickup truck travelling in the same direction struck the sedan, which caught fire, Gagliardi said.
Allegheny County 911 said Pittsburgh police, fire and EMS were dispatched to the highway’s Bates Street on-ramp in the city’s South Oakland neighborhood for reports of a car fire.
The pickup driver and witnesses tried to pull Griffin from the burning vehicle, but troopers said the fire was too intense.
Griffin died at the scene. The other driver was treated for minor injuries but not taken to the hospital, Gagliardi said.
All eastbound lanes were closed and one westbound lane were shut down to accommodate emergency vehicles. Gagliardi said some drivers reported delays as long as two hours.
The scene was clear by 10 a.m. and all lanes were reopened, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
An investigation is ongoing.
