6 injured when empty vehicle drifts into East Liberty crowd

Six people were hurt, three seriously, when an unoccupied car drifted into a crowd Sunday evening at a festival in East Liberty, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

Police, firefighters and emergency medical services responded to Broad Street at Centre Avenue just before 6:30 p.m.

Witnesses told first responders that there was no driver in the vehicle when it slowly drifted into the crowd, which had gathered for a neighborhood festival, police said.

The vehicle’s owner told police he thought he had put it in park before getting out, police said.

Five women and one man were among those injured. Five were taken to hospitals — three in serious but stable condition and two in stable condition, police said.

The sixth victim was evaluated at the scene and refused to be taken to a hospital, police said.

Police said the incident “is believed to be purely accidental in nature.”
