With the passing of Edward V. Burke, 65, who died Nov. 10, Etna is looking to fill a vacancy on council. Burke, a key advocate for the borough, was instrumental in starting the Garden of Etna.

Candidates are being sought to replace Etna Councilman Edward V. Burke, 65, who died on Monday, Nov. 10.

“We are extremely saddened by this loss, as Ed was kind and a hardworking volunteer on everything Etna, who always had a kind word for everyone,” the borough said Nov. 19.

A graduate of Duquesne University, Burke was a mental health therapist. An advocate for his community, Burke devoted his time to numerous local boards and was instrumental in starting the Garden of Etna.

He and his wife, Kim, had three children, Mallory, Conor and Morgan.

Etna is soliciting letters of interest to replace Burke, who represented the Second Ward on borough council. The Second Ward is all of the eastern side of Butler Street and the streets off the eastern side of Butler Street to the river, all of the Kittanning Street area, all the eastern side of Grant Avenue to the border with Shaler and all streets off the eastern side of Grant Avenue.

All candidates must be registered voters who have resided in the Second Ward for at least one year.

Letters of interest and resumes are due by Dec. 1 by email to meramage@etnaborough.org or by mail to Attention Borough Manager, 437 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15223.

The successful candidate will serve the balance of Burke’s term and be considered for the same vacancy for a two-year term, 2026-27, until the next municipal election.

Interviews may be scheduled for Dec. 4.

A celebration of life and volunteer event honoring Burke will be held in the spring. Donations in his memory may be made to the Etna Community Organization. Arrangements are being handled by the Bock Funeral Home, 1500 Mt. Royal Boulevard, Shaler.
