Fire rips through Glassport house; officials suspect electrical issue sparked blaze

A fire ripped through an unoccupied house in Glassport Sunday morning, officials said.

Emergency dispatchers received a report of a residential electrical box on fire in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue about 9:40 a.m.

Nobody was injured, an Allegheny County 911 shift commander said.

Heavy smoke and flames were shooting from the house’s attic by the time firefighters arrived, Glassport fire officials said.

“Crews made an aggressive attack while command hit a second alarm,” the Glassport Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post about the incident.

Several fire companies helped extinguish the flames and secure the home, which sustained major damaged to its roof and upper floors.

Glassport Fire Chief Bruce Snyir told Trib news partner WPXI-TV that the property was unoccupied and under renovation.

Firefighters say they suspect the fire broke out because of an electrical issue.

The official cause of the fire remains under investigation.
