Emergency crews are blaming fireworks for damage to a garage in South Park Township early Saturday.

The Broughton Volunteer Fire Department was called to a home on Frickwood Drive after fireworks discarded into a trash can caught fire and spread to a wall at the home’s garage. The department posted to Facebook at about 5:30 a.m. after extinguishing the fire.

No injuries were reported.

South Park police and the Library Volunteer Fire Company assisted.

Crews determined the fire was caused by fireworks that were tossed in the trash on Friday, the Fourth of July.

The trash can, located next to the home’s garage, ignited and flames spread along the garage wall, according to the post.

“Had it not been for the quick actions of a neighbor who noticed the fire and alerted this family, they may have lost their home,” the post said.

The fire department advises people to have a fire extinguisher nearby and follow these steps to properly dispose of used fireworks — allow them to cool down, soak them in a bucket of water overnight and double-bag them to prevent them from drying out.

Allegheny County on Saturday attributed at least four fires throughout the region to fireworks mishaps. Crews responded to fires in Forest Hills, Swissvale, McKeesport and Kennedy Township.
