An Australian entertainment company that initially touted a floating cinema tour of U.S. cities, including a stop scheduled Wednesday through Friday in Pittsburgh, now says it is postponing the events because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Officials with the Pittsburgh Special Events department and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Pittsburgh auxiliary unit said they tried, but were never able to contact the organizers, a company called Beyond Cinema.
“We’ve received no further information,” Coast Guard Executive Officer Steve Miros said Monday. “We reached out.”
In order for such an event to be held on the Allegheny, Monongahela or Ohio Rivers, the company would need to get a permit from the Coast Guard, Niros said.
If public property was needed to screen the movie, the city would have been involved, Pittsburgh Special Events Manager Brian Katze said.
“The city never received any contact from the company who was responsible for the event,” Katze said.
Beyond Cinema had initially promoted the event in July as a way to watch movies while social distancing because of the covid-19 pandemic.
“Tickets will require you to purchase the whole boat to ensure that groups will be seated with friends and family only, and to allow for social distancing on and between boats!” the company’s website said.
The Pittsburgh stop was set for Wednesday through Friday and it was among a tour of several other U.S. cities, including Philadelphia, New York, Orlando and Houston. All of the events are now postponed until 2021, according to the websites promoting them.
The site has since been updated: “Due to covid, we have had to change the original dates for this event, however, we are currently working hard on new dates and locations for each city. As soon as we have more information regarding dates, movies and ticket releases you will be notified via email,” a notice says.
Beyond Cinema did not return messages seeking further comment.
