Food is distributed in a drive-up setting by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

On the latest episode of the Food Podcast presented by Clearview Federal Credit Union on the TribLIVE podcast network, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank talks about the plans to offer senior boxes at drive-up distributions.

On Sept. 17, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will recognize Hunger Action Day while offering senior boxes for the first time at the Aliquippa drive-up distribution.

Senior boxes are available to those 60 and older who meet income requirements. While many organizations help distribute the 30-pound pantry box to those in the program, the Food Bank wanted to make the boxes available at distributions where seniors could get their normal senior box while also picking up additional boxes filled with fresh meats and produce.

“The great thing about offering our senior boxes at a drive-thru distribution is our seniors are often limited to only receiving this box of pantry stable goods, which doesn’t include any produce or frozen items,” said Jordan Hartman, distribution manager for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. “So we’re really trying to offer our senior boxes in more locations where seniors also have the option to get more shares of food.”

Seniors don’t need to physically drive to the distribution to get the boxes of food. Hartman says whether it’s a normal distribution, or a distribution which additionally offers senior boxes, family members, neighbors or friends can pick up the food for a senior who qualifies.
