Meteorologists issued a warning Friday that Allegheny County is at marginal risk for wildfires.

The combination of low humidity and breezy wind will create marginal fire weather conditions across the region, said the National Weather Service in a social media post.

“Brush fires become more likely in this environment, so use caution if working with flammable materials outside today,” the post said.

TribLive news partner WTAE’s meteorologists issued a special weather statement about the conditions.

Friday’s minimum relative humidity values are forecasted to be between 25% and 35% over the bulk of the region, though rain sneaking into northwest Pennsylvania may limit those humidity drops to the 40% range.

“Wind gusts will be from the south to southwest between 15 and 25 mph with an occasional 30 mph gust in higher terrain locations between noon and 5 p.m.,” WTAE said.

Residents are urged to be cautious when handling anything with potential ignition such as machinery, cigarettes or matches.

“If dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the potential to spread rapidly,” the statement said.
