A nonprofit that helps Fox Chapel Area children and families has found itself on the receiving end of community outreach.
Fox Families Care was awarded $101,000 over the holiday season as the beneficiary of the Fox Chapel Area School District telethon.
The 36th annual fundraiser on Dec. 23 involved students from all six district schools, along with staff, parents and community members. Anonymous donors through Fox Families Care matched donations up to $50,000.
This year’s total brings the money raised by Fox Chapel Area to more than $1.3 million since the charity effort began.
Superintendent Mary Catherine Reljac said leaders are proud of the school community for coming together to help students in their own backyard.
“The wonderful thing about the telethon is that it is led by students,” Reljac said. “They do the planning and help organize fundraisers throughout the district.”
The telethon was coordinated by the district leadership council and the high school’s video production students, who plan and produce the event.
“It’s a wonderful event that brings together the entire school community to support a great cause,” Reljac said.
Fox Families Care, founded in 2019, works to connect children and families to resources sometimes prohibited by finances.
Members work to bridge the gap and level playing fields for all students.
The group has provided scholarships to high school seniors seeking higher education, extracurricular activities and summer camps.
A post on the group’s Facebook page thanked the district for the significant donation.
“We’re so very grateful to the students, staff, parents and community members who participated in this year’s telethon, making it a huge success,” the post said. “These funds will provide tangible support to local students and their families.”
