Eleven Fox Chapel Area High School students were chosen for two 2019 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) honors bands.

The PMEA District 1 honors jazz ensemble includes seniors Alexander Perez and Glenna Van Dyke and juniors Michael Mendelson and Jacob Rendall. They were selected by audition.

The ensemble each year comprises three 19-piece jazz bands with students from about 90 school districts that make up PMEA District 1.

Bands performed Feb. 2 at North Allegheny Senior High School under the direction of world-renowned jazz arrangers/composers Michael Kamuf and Ralph Ford.

The PMEA District 1 Band East included 10 district students who also were chosen by audition.

They are seniors Megan Hayes, Hannah Kim, Noah Manges, Alexander Perez and Glenna Van Dyke; juniors Jacob Rendall and Anzu Sekikawa; and sophomores Madelyn Francis, Nathaniel Kisslinger and Joey Wang.

The band had 120 of the best student-musicians from 35 high schools in Allegheny, Westmoreland and Fayette counties.

They performed Jan. 25 at Burrell High School. Guest conductor was Daniel Neuenschwander, director of bands at Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pa.
