Aspinwall’s dog park will close April 1 to make way for summer sports.

The area for four-legged friends is housed at the community ball fields off Fifth Street and returns to its original use each spring.

The park will host baseball and softball leagues through Halloween.

Residents are reminded to obey the closure or face a $25 citation, Mayor Joe Noro has said. Repeat offenders face fines of up to $1,000.

“Notices were placed at the field,” Manager Melissa Lang said.

She also planned to send a Swiftreach phone notification to help avoid some of the problems that occurred last summer. Council received several complaints from baseball families and other park-goers who said residents were not abiding by the scheduled closure.

Lang advised residents to call the police if someone is visiting the park with a dog during off-hours.

Council opened the dog park in 2017 to rave reviews from many residents. The space is limited to the fenced portion of the park. Dogs are prohibited from playing in the adjacent Fountain Park.

Hours are dawn to dusk Nov. 1 through March 31.

Pet-lovers are reminded they also can walk their dogs on a leash at Aspinwall Fireman’s Park at the top of Center Avenue. And, there is a small off-leash area for dogs at Aspinwall Riverfront Park that was opened in late 2018. It is open year-round.
