Aspinwall’s yearly street cleanup is moving forward, though participants will have to register for a specific area to handle this year.

“Green Streets” will be Oct. 23-25.

A borough tradition, the cleanup typically sees crowds of people canvassing roads, walkways and green spaces to collect litter. In past years, there have been up to 100 people participating.

Participants can register at form.jotform.com.

“This is a community event to help freshen up the streets, alleys and parks of Aspinwall by cleaning up the litter that has collected over the past year,” volunteer Andy Collins said.

Sponsored by the Aspinwall Neighbors group, the event usually is hosted in a single time slot nearer to Earth Day in the spring but was postponed because of covid-19 concerns.

This year, it has been expanded to three days to allow for social distancing.

“Volunteer groups should be limited to members of the same household,” Aspinwall Neighbors spokeswoman Sarah Shaffer said.

Participants are encouraged to bring grabbers or tongs to minimize contact with debris, she said.

Supplies that include gloves and trash bags will be provided.

Adult volunteers can choose high-traffic areas, near the fences at Aspinwall Recreation Area or along the Freeport Road rail corridor.

Family friendly spots, such as playgrounds and alleys, are also available.

Trash bags can be deposited at several spots, including the municipal parking lot, fire station No. 2 and Delafield Road under the bypass.

Volunteers are needed to collect the heaping bags and take them to the dumpster along Field Avenue.

Shaffer said all trash collection should be done during daylight hours, and volunteers should wear the safety vests provided.

Large or hazardous items should be left alone and reported for alternate pickup.
