A $550,000 sewer line project along Eastern Avenue in Aspinwall has been pushed back to spring.
Council on Wednesday night said it hoped to get a jump on the prep work but decided it would be more efficient to wait for consistent temperatures.
“We wanted to try to do some of it while it’s been nice,” administrative assistant Brian Corey-O’Connor said. “But this way, we won’t have to keep closing and reopening roads.”
Work is expected to alleviate overflow problems along Eastern Avenue by separating the storm and sewer lines.
Installation of a separate line will reduce the amount of water flowing into the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (Alcosan) sewage plants through the borough’s current combined system, Borough Manager Melissa Lang said.
The project will target Third Street to Freeport Road.
Lang said the majority of the project will be paid with a $433,000 grant from Alcosan. Money will come through the GROW program, or Green Revitalization of Our Waterways.
Alcosan created the GROW program in 2016 and has since awarded grants totaling $18 million for 59 projects across the region.
In all, the projects are expected to reduce the amount of overflows into the Allegheny River and other local waterways by about 109 million gallons.
